Many delightful connections between astrology and the Harry Potter series exist, and this page is dedicated to exploring them. J. K. Rowling knows how to interpret a natal chart - she even did a handwritten analysis of her friend's birth chart (Roger Julian Tosswell) and their son's (Jack David Buchanan) at the same time that she was writing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Rowling also deliberately chose characters' birthdays that matched their personality with their Sun sign. The Black family is named after a variety of fixed stars (Sirius, Bellatrix, Regulus, etc.) or constellations (Andromeda). The Harry Potter books have references to astrology throughout, with both Divination professors, Sybill Trelawney and Firenze the centaur, delving into it. Rowling even had an astrologer as an English teacher during her primary education. Steve Eddy, who co-authored The Art and Science of the Stars with Nicholas Campion, taught Jo when she was eleven years old.
Hogwarts Astrology explores the connection between astrology, the Harry Potter books, and J.K. Rowling. We can learn the zodiac signs through the lens of Harry Potter by examining the characters that embody them - for example Hermione is a Virgo, Ron is a Pisces, and Hagrid is a Sagittarius. There are a number of other topics I plan to explore in future articles, podcast episodes, and videos, such as the characters' differing views on astrology, examining which of Trelawney's predictions hold up, the mythology behind Trelawney's ancestor Cassandra as well as other characters, how the series deals with fate and free will, the Hogwarts Houses equating with the four elements, the role of prophecy in the world of Harry Potter, etc.
